4 Ways To Make Changes Last
Change is Possible!
Be Committed
Consider how badly you want to change, then think about how motivated you are to maintain these changes. You should adopt an attitude that you expect to change, confidence that you will change and be willing to do whatever is necessary for change to last.
2. Be Realistic
You must set realistic goals. Most of us know that goals should be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timely), so it is important to skip the vague descriptions or generalizations during goal setting and list deadlines. You can also think of ways of getting feedback from those around you.
3. Relapse Prevention
Relapse is not unusual, so do not beat yourself up if you fall off course. Get back up again. When you do, evaluate your past failures and determine what went wrong and adjust where necessary. Some key areas you must identify are:
a) High risk situations b) Coping skills c) Source of temptation and remove them
4. Get Support
Changing is one thing but maintaining change largely depends on your support system. Get your partner or family on board so they can encourage you and provide feedback. You will also find yourself being accountable to your support system and this will be effective in creating lasting change.
Bonus Tip: Never underestimate the importance your spirituality can have on your desire to change. Believing and trusting in God, who is omnipotent (all-powerful) and who gives of His unlimited resources to strengthen you through His Holy Spirit, should not be underestimated. God provides you with transformative power for lasting lifelong change.
